We can’t escape design, and we are all taking part in it.
Design is as much an art as it is a science. We use design as a tool to solve the problem of how and where to put all of our things. In effect, the goal is for function, while ideally looking pleasing in the process. Whether or not you are consciously trying to place things in a meaningful way, you have to put your things somewhere. Therefore, you are living the results of your designs everyday.
There are time-tested methods on the best design practices, and many of these make perfect sense when considered in and of themselves. You likely wouldn’t put your bed in the very center of your bedroom, or line all of your living room seating in a row on the back wall. How many of us take the time to understand why though?
If you think logically about why we place items where we do, it becomes clear.
Having your bed against the wall where you typically place it brings more stability and comfort to your sleep. Having your chairs grouped around a coffee table creates an inviting space for conversation.
These concepts work for all styles of design, whether your look is classical, contemporary, or boho chic. The example of seating arrangement is more wrapped around the functional purpose of design. On the other hand, in the example of the bed, it’s more about the way you feel. This is a huge part of design that we have all experienced, but don’t always recognize. We also don’t always have the knowledge to make the necessary adjustments. I want to help you define these elements of design to align your environment to work for you.
You have the power to improve the way you feel in your space.
When referring to alignment, there is the concept of organization of items in a straight or balanced manner. However, there is also the definition “to be in or come into precise adjustment.” To adjust objects and the way you think when you design, you can change that energy and feeling you experience. You may be looking for something calm and serene in an owner’s suite, or playful and exciting in a child’s room. Perhaps it’s just the opposite and you want your bedroom to protrude the same playful energy as your personality.
It’s all about what works for you.
I’ll be sharing a series of posts aimed at various design concepts and how they work your senses. You can then try out different methods based on what you want to accomplish in that space. You’ll also get some tips on steps you can immediately try out on your own. I’ll refer to this last portion as a little “Carpe Diem” action!
Fun fact: While many translate the term ‘Carpe Diem’ as “Seize the day,” in actuality it literally means “Pluck the day.” This is referring to a type of ‘stop and smell the roses’ attitude.
This philosophy on life therefor isn’t about trying to make the most of every moment and burn yourself out with multitasking. Instead, it’s about taking a moment to focus and enjoy what’s in front of you. Here’s a great way to start some action in your own home:
CARPE DIEM CONNECTION~ Take a walk around your house. Stop at the doorway of each room and take a look around. Make mental (or hardcopy!) notes of the following: - What uses does this room currently have? - What uses do I want this room to have? - What feelings come to mind when I'm in this room... calm? fun? busy? - Are those the feelings I want? If not, what should I feel? Keep those in mind when considering color on walls and in accents, the size and style of furniture, and patterns, prints, and textures used throughout the room.
You don’t have to make an investment to start aligning with design either. Simply swapping out pieces or taking out hefty or unwanted objects will begin to invoke a more positive experience in your space. Most importantly, let your innate creativity flow, your personality show, and have fun with it!
Your journey begins now!
